Pelican

Located in the northwestern part of Chichagof Island in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area and approximately 70 miles west of Juneau (about 1 hour flight). Pelican has cool summers, mild winters and heavy rain throughout the year. Most of the community is built on pilings over the tidelands and is home to 69 year-around residents, about 200 staying in just the summer. Like most areas in Southeast Alaska, Pelican is dependent on float planes and the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry for transportation, as well as water taxi services that are available. There are currently no paved roads in Pelican but there is a boardwalk which provides as the town’s main passage, (mostly due to the lack of flat land).
