Just on the north shore of Icy Passage at the mouth of the Salmon River, 48 air miles northwest of Juneau. Gustavus is surrounded by Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve on three sides. Gustavus was originally named Strawberry Point. The name changed to “Gustavus” in 1925 when the US post office required a change for its new post office. The name came from Point Gustavus, located at the mouth of Glacier Bay. Although, locals still call it Strawberry Point. The year round population is approximately 450 and during the summer months, up to 3 times that much!
