Learn more about Juneau
Known as the Capital City of Alaska since 1906, Juneau is located in the southeaster part of the state, on the Gastineau Channel and is the heart of the inside passage. It is protected by the open Pacific Ocean by 75 miles of islands. In 1970, the city of Juneau and the city of Douglas (along with the surrounding greater Juneau Borough) merged together, forming the City and Borough of Juneau. The City and Borough had a reported population of 31,276 in 2019, making it the second-most populated city in Alaska (behind Anchorage). Even though it is a part of the United States mainland, Juneau is only accessible by boat or plane due to its rugged terrain.
The primary employer in Juneau is government–state, federal and municipal, and the University of Alaska Southeast. Another large contributor is the tourism industry, generating most of its income in the summer months. The fishing industry is still a large part of Juneau’s economy and hosts many of the commercial fishing associations in Alaska.
Residents and visitors alike enjoy walking, hiking, biking, etc. for recreational and everyday transportation purposes as Juneau boasts more than 250 miles of hiking trails and it’s largest road is only 42 miles long!
