Hoonah meaning, “Village by the Cliff”, in home to about 769 people. It’s located approximately 30 miles west of Juneau and is in the southeast region of the Alaska panhandle. Hoonah has cool summers, mild winters and heavy rain throughout the year and is known for its foggy climate. The airport is closed about 30 days a year due to foggy periods in the spring and fall. The Hoonah Packing Company built a large cannery in 1912, which halted operations in 1954. It is now used today by commercial fisherman for repairing and storing their boats and equipment.
