Haines, Alaska, founded in 1968, is 2,725 square miles and located in the Northern Panhandle of Alaska. It is accessible by boat, water and road. By road, via the 159-mile Haines Highway which branches from the Alaska Highway 100 miles north of Whitehorse at Haines Junction. The Haines Borough is home to over 2,518 residents (2019). Located in Haines is Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, which has the world’s largest concentration of bald eagles.
